Two will not miss each other: the narrowest street in Prague, equipped with a traffic light

In the oldest district of Prague, there is an extremely narrow street where even two people will not miss each other. To avoid annoying situations there, it was equipped with traffic lights on both sides.

The street is called Vinarna Chertovka. Its width is only 70 centimeters, and its length is about 32 meters. At its core, it is just a few dozen steps between neighboring buildings.

If we turn to history, the Devil received its status of Vinarna Street relatively recently. At first, it was a fire passageway between two detached houses.

It was created in the middle of the XV century after two major fires that occurred in Prague with a difference of 35 years. The main task of the passage was to ensure the rapid evacuation of people and prevent the fire from spreading too quickly.

Officially, the Vinarna Chertovka is still a fire pass, and all identification signs and advertising in tourist brochures are designed exclusively to attract the attention of guests of the city.

It is worth noting that once in Prague there were many such "streets". Only a few have survived to this day, and Vinarna Chertovka is the most famous among them.

The street got its name because of a nearby restaurant with a wonderful wine shop. The institution itself was named after the Chertovka River, which flows nearby. The winery of the same name is also located here.

If you ever get there, you will definitely hear stories about how an obese lady or a man suffered in the Devil's Vinarna. Or how two people met inside and couldn't miss each other.

One can only guess how true these stories are, but in order to avoid such upsets, representatives of the fire department ordered to install pedestrian traffic lights from both ends of the street.

The rules are familiar: if the green light is on, you can safely dive between the houses, and when the red light turns on – you need to wait until the street is cleared. Traffic lights are controlled manually using a special button.
