Pictolic got in touch with Dasol Kim and asked some questions about his work. First, we wanted to know what inspired the pioneer in the Korean tattoo scene to start creating hyper-detailed and complex tattoos. We learned that: “I've loved drawing since I was young, always enjoying creating detailed artwork. While studying art in college in Korea, I saw a friend's Japanese tattoo up close and was truly fascinated. There was a mistake made by the tattoo artist, causing a part of the tattoo to fade, which made it look like a watercolor painting. This made me realize that tattoos could have such diverse expressions. At that moment, I wanted to explore tattooing as a new medium of art. I started teaching myself tattooing and began creating intricate designs on skin, aligning with my favorite artistic style. My work became increasingly sophisticated, and through it, I aimed to evoke artistic emotions in people.”

The artist shared with us more about the characteristics of the tattoos he creates: “There are various genres in tattoo art, such as irezumi, realism, black and grey, old school, etc. My tattoo style is hard to categorize into a specific genre; it is more casual and free-spirited. I believe this has piqued the interest of many people in tattoos. Especially for those who studied art, my work has provided new inspiration and hints. I believe my work has positively influenced other tattoo artists, encouraging them to experiment with new styles.”

Asked what challenges he faced at first when paving the way for the hyper-detailed tattoo style, Dasol Kim answered: “Initially, there were very few ultra-detailed tattoo styles and equipment was lacking. It was hard to find fine needles and machines capable of delicate work. The tattoo machines available were heavy and noisy. I experimented with and researched a lot of equipment, going through various trials and errors. Over time, I found better equipment and improved my techniques. This process was challenging but also extremely enjoyable and fascinating. My passion and curiosity played a significant role in overcoming these challenges.”

We were excited that the artist wanted to share some insights into his creative process with us: “Whenever I look at visual arts such as drawings, graphics, movies, and books, I habitually imagine how they would fit as a tattoo. My designs are often inspired by the art pieces I come across. For example, I might get ideas from a scene in a movie or an illustration in a book. I sketch based on these inspirations and then complete the tattoo design from that sketch. Sometimes, I draw inspiration from nature, and small details I notice in everyday life can become significant sources of inspiration.”
