The evolution of Picasso's self-portrait: from 15 to 90 years

But if you trace the history of Picasso's self-portraits from the time when he was still a young artist to his very late old age, you will notice that they have a lot in common, and it is obvious that these portraits were created by the same person.
To explain such differences, here is a quote from the artist himself: “The different styles that I use in my art should not be seen as evolution or steps towards an unknown ideal of painting ... Different themes inevitably require different ways of expression. It is not evidence of evolution or progress, it is just ideas expressed in different ways."
