It would seem that in the second half of the XX century it is possible to come up with something new in this? But the master did a lot — he freed this direction of photography from cliches and began to show female nudity not in the accepted classical form, but as it is — sensual, tender, funny and not always perfect. (Careful! Nude).
Sam Haskins was born on November 11, 1926 in South Africa. Sam took his first steps as a professional photographer in Johannesburg, but the desire for creative growth forced him to move to London in 1968. Haskins left a very noticeable mark in the world of post-war photography, especially in such a complex genre as nude.
Although Haskins worked with both color and black-and-white photographs, he is considered a genius of monochrome photography. In 1962, Haskins published his first photobook "Five Girls", in which he showed a completely new look at nude photos in black and white.
After the release of this publication, the world of erotic photography could not be the same. Haskins demonstrated how easily and exquisitely it is possible to rid nude pictures of vulgarity and pretentiousness. The innovative ideas of this outstanding photographer were highly appreciated by his contemporaries and his techniques are still used by the most famous masters of the planet.
But Haskins did not stop there and continued to reform the genre. In 1964, his second photobook "Cowboy Kate" was published, in which the photographer used the graininess of the images as an original artistic technique.
In 1964, the album received the prestigious Prix Nadar award in France, thanks to which its circulation grew to one million. "Cowboy Kate" has become the best-selling photo book in history, a record that has not yet been broken.
Vogue and Harper's Bazaar magazines highly appreciated the photographs of the photographer and they decorated their covers and pages for many years. Interestingly, the fashion world recognized the artist when he was already over 70. Ironically, the best publications on the planet for many years collaborated with photographers who looked up to Haskins, but did not notice the master himself. Sam Haskins worked with fashion publications from 2000 until his death in 2009.
There are many masters in the world of photography today, whose works somehow trace the influence of Sam Haskins. One of the worthy followers of the master of black and white nude is the Dutch photographer Rutger ten Brooke.
