He worked as a cowboy, sailor, scout, accountant, Salvation Army cadet and not only, and in the late 1930s he covered and filmed the Sino-Japanese War. Lief came to Hollywood only in 1949, when he was already 44 years old, and quickly gained popularity there. From then until his death, he remained one of the most beloved photographers of Hollywood stars.
