Wars, epidemics, natural disasters or man-made disasters are to blame for this. But it also happens that even scientists cannot say why a thriving city or village has become a ghost. The Indian village of Kuldhara, located in the northern state of Rajasthan, is just such a place.
Kuldhara boasts a history that many cities will envy. The village was founded in 1291 by Paliwal Brahmins. This is an ancient and highly respected clan belonging to the highest caste. Its representatives were known for their business qualities and knowledge in agriculture.
During its existence, Kuldhara has seen everything. The village was destroyed several times by wars, devastated by diseases. But she always revived and became even richer. This was the case until 1825, when the entire population of this blessed place disappeared without a trace in just one night.
There are many versions of this event and not all of them are mystical. One of the legends says that one of the high-ranking officials of Rajasthan named Salim Singh fell in love with the daughter of a brahmin Chieftain. He demanded that the girl be given to him as a wife, otherwise he promised to strangle the inhabitants of Kuldhara with huge taxes.
But in In India, with its caste society, such persistence does not always bear fruit. Yes, Singh was a respected person in the state and served as a minister. But he was not a Brahmin by birth, and this is very important. No one was going to give him a high-born beauty because of the whim of an official. Therefore, the elders decided that the villagers should leave it forever. Only in this way, they believed, it would be possible to avoid the consequences of refusal.
Since it was a matter of women's honor, along with the population of Kuldhara, residents of another 83 small Brahmin villages located nearby left. Interestingly, a huge number of people with livestock and belongings left their homes in just one night. No one knows where they went — they just disappeared. In a matter of hours, the region that had flourished for centuries was emptied, and there were no more people willing to settle in it.
One could use the hackneyed cliche "the night jungle swallowed them up." But this will not be true, because the village is located on a desolate and stony plain as flat as a table. This makes the disappearance of many people even more intriguing. It was even hypothesized that the evil Singh and his men killed everyone. Perhaps he could have dealt with the inhabitants of the village and the surrounding area overnight. But where are the bodies then?
Desolation has reigned on these lands for almost two hundred years. The ruins of Kuldhara are inhabited only by snakes and scorpions. It is said that the Brahmins enchanted their land by putting an ancient curse on it. Whether this is true or not, no one knows. But ordinary Hindus are very superstitious people, so they prefer to stay away from the ruins.
But for different researchers of paranormal phenomena, Kuldhara is smeared with honey. There you can often see strange people with unusual devices and cult objects. The New Delhi Paranormal Society even published a report on its observations on the ruins. "Scientists" claim that the story of the curse is the pure truth, and on their recordings you can hear the voices of dead people.
Fortunately, Kuldhara is remembered not only by charlatans, but also by the authorities of the state and the country. The Archaeological Survey of India has recognized the ruins as a monument of national importance and is trying to preserve them. Tourists love this mysterious place and all conditions are created for them here. Historians of Rajasthan still do not lose hope to find out how thousands of people could disappear overnight. Perhaps Kuldhara will reveal this secret someday.
