His career coincided with a critical period in Iran's modern history, an era of active influence on Iranian culture by Western civilization, stretching from the reign of Nasir al-din Shah (reigned 1848-1896) to Reza Shah Pahlavi (reigned 1925-1941).
One of the most famous photographers of the Qajar and Pahlavi era was an Iranian citizen, an Armenian of Russian origin Anton Sevryugin, who received a gold medal at the international exhibition in Brussels. All photos were taken in 1901.
