In the Netherlands, due to fear of the end of the world, a father of 9 years kept his children in a bunker

In 1999, the comedy film "Explosion from the Past" was released about a family who lived in a bunker for many years because of fear of nuclear war. In 2019, the story became a reality. For nine years, the father kept his six children in the basement of the house, claiming that the end of the world had happened on the surface and they were the only survivors.

On October 15, 2019, a guy dressed in worn clothes walked into a bar in the Dutch town of Reinerwold. The stranger had a long beard and hair, he looked confused and did not understand where he was. Calming down slightly, the guy ordered five glasses of beer and, getting drunk, told the owner of the bar, Chris Westerbeck, who he was and where he came from.

The stranger said that he and five of his brothers and sisters live in a bunker, from which their own father does not let them out because of fear of the end of the world. He is the eldest of the brothers and never went to school. The guy did not understand where he was and how long he had lived underground.

The road to the farm

He escaped from the bunker and wants to save his family, who are tired of living in fear. The owner of the bar called the police and during the interrogation it turned out that the guy was 25 years old and he had been in isolation for the last 9 of them. Their farm is located not far from the Runerwold, but it stands on the outskirts, in a thicket of tall trees, and to get to it you have to walk over the bridge over the canal.

The farmhouse looked abandoned, but in the living room behind the closet, the police found a staircase leading to the basement, converted into a bunker. A 58-year-old father and five of his children aged 16 to 25 were found underground. All the family members were exhausted and believed that they were the only survivors on the planet. For nine years the family lived on a subsistence farm. On the surface, my father tended a single goat and cultivated a vegetable garden.

Journalists near the farm

A few neighbors said that they sometimes saw a man on the farm and did not suspect that six adult children lived with him. The territory of the estate is surrounded by a fence and signs prohibiting passage. In the interests of the investigation, the family's personal data were not disclosed, but the police said that the father was arrested, and the children's mother died. During isolation, the head of the family suffered a brain hemorrhage, and he is too weak to clarify the situation.
