When it comes to movie awards, there are few more coveted than the Oscars, which have been considered the best validation of film quality for almost as long as Hollywood has existed.

However, winning an Oscar is not always a blessing, especially when it comes to heated races between two major films dead set on winning the Best Picture trophy. Sometimes a movie that wins the golden statuette is only remembered for that, which hurts its chances of being treated as a movie and not an Oscar poster project.

Here are 7 underrated Best Picture winners that were hurt by winning an Oscar:

Even though we're saying that the above movies were hurt by winning an Oscar, don't think we're trying to put them down in any way. On the contrary, the movies mentioned above are wonderful and stand miles above the trainwrecks like "Shakespeare in Love" and "Crash" that won their Best Picture trophies completely undeservedly.

Some of the films on this list were simply not lucky enough to sway the voters in their favor, with "How Green Was My Valley" being the most striking example. Despite being a certified masterpiece and one of the best films John Ford ever directed, both fans and critics couldn't forgive it for beating out "Citizen Kane," thus destroying the chances of this wonderful movie being remembered fondly.

It seems that sometimes not winning is the best strategy.

The Oscars 2024 will be held Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event is to start at 7 p.m. EST.
