However, like any live event, the Oscars have never been safe from controversial and embarrassing films, some of which were so cringe-worthy that fans had no choice but to turn off their televisions and sit for a minute or two to contemplate what they had just witnessed.

We bet you cringed at least a few times while reading this list, because seeing big stars behave in such an unseemly manner makes you wonder why they became so popular in the first place.
And while we can certainly forgive John Travolta for mispronouncing Idina Menzel's name and Rob Lowe for singing a badly written song, Will Smith's infamous slap will never be forgotten as the cast for some reason decided he could physically harm Chris Rock over a joke.
With the 2024 Oscars just around the corner, we're crossing our fingers that nothing embarrassing happens during the livestream.
The Oscars this year will be held Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event is to start at 7 p.m. EST.
