On July 19, 2012, during a fierce military confrontation with opposition forces, the Syrian army began bombing Aleppo. Thousands of civilians were killed and hundreds of thousands were forced to leave their homes. This battle caused the catastrophic destruction of the Old City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
