Colors of Japan XIX century through the eyes of American photographer
Photo appeared in Japan a little later of its invention, when in the 1850s, the country was opened to trade and visitors from Western countries. The restoration of the Empire and the Meiji period brought about many changes, including new technologies and types of production, and especially the rapidly changing life of the Japanese in the late nineteenth century.
The authorship of these hand-painted photos of Japan 1890-ies is not known. They are stored in the album of the new York public library. There are Studio shots with posing people and incredible beauty of the scenery.
