These people are surrounded by many myths and legends, but few people know who they are and what they do. Many are sure that these are some kind of rulers, vested with complete power over their subjects. But who really are these patriarchs of the gypsy world and why do the free nomadic people need them?
We have to disappoint you - there are no gypsy barons. This “title” appeared thanks to the operetta “The Gypsy Baron” by Johann Strauss, presented to the public in 1885. From that moment on, it became generally accepted and this is what influential gypsies are called. In the Gypsy language there is a word “baro”, meaning “elder”, “chief”.
Gypsy barons are not related to the aristocracy, and their wives do not call themselves baronesses. These people have no official status, but they perform the functions of elders. Their responsibilities include resolving issues within the Roma community and problems related to the outside world. These are a kind of “solvers” who know how to resolve this or that conflict, or start a business, and therefore enjoy special respect. Barons have high authority, so people turn to them for advice, and try to follow their instructions.
There are persistent rumors that the gypsies pay tribute to their barons. It is quite difficult to confirm or refute this. The Gypsies are a very closed caste and very little is known about the affairs within their communities. It is quite possible that the elder receives something in the form of gratitude for solving some issues, but this is only an assumption. One way or another, these are people who live very richly and luxury accompanies them even after death.
The most famous gypsy baron is Florin Cioaba. This man was so respected by Gypsies all over the world that he is called the “King of the Gypsies.” He was born in 1954 in the family of a Gypsy baron. Surprisingly, Choaba was educated at a theological seminary, and then served as a priest for a long time.
The role of a priest for a gypsy is quite unusual, because gypsies have their own special relationship with religion. But no matter what, Choaba always respected the laws of his people. For example, like most gypsy men, he got married at the age of 14. After the death of his father in 1997, he had to resign from the priesthood and take his father's place. Florin Cioaba was not only the most famous gypsy on the planet, but also the richest citizen of Romania. His annual income reached 80 million euros (8.6 billion rubles). In total, his Koldash clan earned up to 300 million euros ($32.3 billion) a year.
In addition, Cioaba was elected head of the International Union of Roma. He was a significant person in his country and the President of Romania Traian Basescu was friends with him. The “King of the Gypsies” liked his popularity and therefore he willingly gave interviews and regularly appeared on television.
After the death of the old king, his son, Dorin Choaba, took his place. The successor was not so sociable, and he did not inherit his father’s charisma. But his strong point was his business acumen. The new king is not often seen on television, but what is certain is that he performs his duties well.
