By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/what-were-punks-30-years-ago.htmlThose unfamiliar with the culture of the 1980s Los Angeles punk and hardcore scene may not have heard of photographers Brian and Nikki Tucker and their work. Thirty years later, the Tuckers, with the help of book dealer Arthur Fournier, were able to release an archive of their photographic work on subcultural environments, and this year they are exhibiting a book at an art book fair in Los Angeles.
The Tuckers started a poster-sized black-and-white photography magazine called FER-YOUz. 16 issues were published in three years. After that, Brian and Nikki gained a reputation as the most distinctive and respected photographers in the hardcore subculture. Fournier says of them this: “This whole undertaking has a huge positive impact on the lives of some of the most marginalized and disadvantaged babies in this environment. It was never about the exploitation of the image.
Despite the fact that Brian and Nikki Tucker have always been outside of this subculture, Black Flag founder and vocalist Keith Morris repeats about them over and over again: “The most amazing thing about all this is how easily they get through it all. They both ignore all boundaries and become part of families, gangs, communities. They are always welcome guests at any punk gathering."
