In addition to its core responsibilities, Hurley took an active part in solving everyday problems of the expedition, and was also a member of the campaign "southern party" under the leadership of astronomer Edward Badge, the purpose of which was to conduct observations of terrestrial magnetism in the vicinity of the South magnetic pole of the Earth.
