By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/the-ships-and-officers-of-the-navy-of-the-russian-empire-in-1893.htmlBy the end of the XVIII century the Russian Navy was the third largest in the world (first and second places were taken by Britain and France respectively). In the early nineteenth century, the Navy consisted of the Baltic and black sea fleets, Caspian, Okhotsk and white sea flotillas. In 1802, was created the Ministry of naval forces, later renamed the Naval Ministry.
At the same time for the Russian Navy began the era of steam. In 1826 was built the first military steamer "Izhora", armed with eight guns, ten years later, the first steam frigate "Hercules."
At the end of the XIX century the Navy of the Russian Empire continued to expand, especially during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II, is highly sympathetic to the doctrine of American naval theorist Admiral Alfred Mahan.
We present you rare archival photographs of Russian ships and sailors from the Library of Congress, taken around 1893.
