Israelis Bidermanas (full name of the photographer) was born in 1911 into a Jewish family in the town of Marijampole, Lithuania. School mates called him a dreamer. Father wanted to Izis worked as a carpenter, but the boy was keen on painting. At 13 he left school and began to study photography. Later he left his native city to travel and take pictures.
