This place, located on a hill, is called the Mountain of Crosses. It got its name because of about 50 thousand crosses located here.
The date of the appearance of this mysterious place is shrouded in mystery, and so far no one can answer exactly about the reasons for its appearance.
Some claim that such a number of crosses were erected in honor of the fallen in the Lithuanian uprising brutally suppressed by the authorities of the Russian Empire in 1831.
The Mountain of Crosses is not a cemetery at all, as one might think. This mysterious place is shrouded in many legends, according to which everyone who leaves a cross at this place will be lucky.
About the painful: "Lord, please make Harold stop drinking."
After wandering around the Mountain of Crosses, you can find crosses of a wide variety of designs: from tall wooden crosses to body crosses.
There is even a crucifix on the hill, installed by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Lithuania on September 7, 1993. Thanks to this event, the Mountain of Crosses has become very famous in the Catholic world, and this has further increased the number of pilgrims and tourists coming here every year.
There is a legend that once a Catholic monastery was located on the site of the Mountain of Crosses, which suddenly went underground.
After this event, one of the residents of a nearby village had a daughter who was very ill, and then the father decided to install a cross in a salted place. The miracle happened, and the terminally ill daughter recovered.
The rumor about miraculous healing spread all over Lithuania, and people began to come to this place more and more often, hoping for a miracle and installing crosses. That's how, according to legend, the Mountain of Crosses appeared.
Now the Mountain of Crosses is a place of pilgrimage not only for Catholics, but also for representatives of other Christian denominations.
With the advent of Soviet power in Lithuania, several attempts were made to destroy this mysterious place. But every time after the demolition of the crosses, they appeared on the mountain again.
So the residents of Lithuania protested against the policy pursued by the Soviet authorities.
Today, about 200 thousand crosses made of a wide variety of materials are installed on the Mountain: from wood to metal.
