Now we take a dozen selfies in a minute to choose the best, and a few centuries ago artists could bring their paintings to perfection for years. That's probably why the people who posed for them took it very seriously: it's not easy to find a portrait in an art gallery where a person smiles. It's good that we now have technology that can fix this.

London designer Ollie Gibbs went to the Rijksmuseum Gallery in Amsterdam, taking with him a smartphone with the FaceApp application. It is based on an algorithm that can "draw" a smile on almost any frowning face — and do it very naturally. Now you can see what people from classical portraits and sculptures would look like if they knew that they need to treat everything positively, believe in the best and smile more often.
