The series "The Magnificent Century" won the hearts of millions of viewers around the world. Despite the fact that many conservative Turks were outraged by the film, the project can be called super successful. The main character, Sultan Suleiman, appeared before the audience as a charismatic, powerful and incredibly attractive man. But to what extent does the on-screen image correspond to historical reality? Historians are ready to disappoint fans. The real Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent did not at all resemble his TV series double.

Unfortunately, historians are forced to disappoint fans of the series. In reality, the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent can hardly be called handsome, even with a big stretch. Quite a few portraits of the ruler have been preserved, among which there are many similar to the image created by the Turkish actor Halit Ergench. But reality, as often happens, is very different from the cinematic ideal.

Historical documents contain many impartial descriptions of Suleiman made by foreigners. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, the sultan had small brown eyes, set far apart, and a large "aquiline" nose. He was distinguished by a long neck and very pale skin. The Ottoman ruler had yellow teeth, which, however, was typical for people of that time. Usually, the sultan wore a moustache, and a beard adorned his face only during military campaigns. Returning home, Suleiman immediately shaved off his beard.

As for his physique, historians' opinions differ. Some describe Suleiman as thin and sinewy. Others believe that he was overweight and walked with a waddling gait. Most likely, his gait really left much to be desired. It is known that from early childhood, Suleiman spent a lot of time in the saddle, which could have led to crooked legs.

Actor Halit Ergenç, who played Suleiman in the series, is 183 cm tall. The Sultan himself was much shorter - no taller than 165 cm. This fact is considered the most reliable, since the ruler's personal belongings and weapons made strictly according to his parameters have been preserved. Thus, it can be said with a high degree of probability that Suleiman was not a handsome man.

Although the Sultan's appearance in the series was noticeably embellished, his character in "The Magnificent Century" is conveyed quite accurately. Suleiman was distinguished by his generosity and determination, but at the same time he was quick-tempered and very domineering. He did not remain indifferent to the female sex, which explains the presence of a huge harem, which was regularly replenished with new concubines. At the same time, there was only one legal wife - Khyurrem, the Ukrainian Roksolana. Their union became a historical symbol of love and political wisdom.

Historical sources say that in his old age Suleiman's character deteriorated. He became irritable and suspicious, and saw conspirators everywhere. He even suspected his sons of wanting to seize power, and was rude and harsh with them because of this. Despite this, Suleiman the Magnificent went down in history as a wise and strong ruler who was loved by the people.

Although Suleiman's appearance may disappoint fans of the series, his contribution to the history of the Ottoman Empire remains undeniable. Do you think that historical accuracy should be observed in the film or can the characters be embellished? Share your opinion in the comments!
