During Hollywood's golden age, Los Angeles offered the perfect place to unwind after long, arduous shoots in the nearby studios. As now, it was a place to see and be seen. The unique collection ranges from the silent era and legends like Estelle Taylor and Pola Negri to late 1970s actresses Bo Derek and Diane Keaton.
1. Marilyn Monroe takes a break from filming in the 1950s on a Los Angeles beach. Her last completed film was The Misfits (1961), in which she starred with Clark Gable. The actress died of an overdose the following year.
2. Ava Gardner on the beach in the 1940s. Her breakthrough role was in the film The Killers (1946). Gardner became one of Hollywood's leading actresses and one of the most beautiful women of her time.
3. Marjorie Hellen, star of The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and Rocket to the Moon (1958), in a white lace-collared, pearl-studded swimsuit on a Los Angeles beach in 1956. The actress later changed her name to Leslie Parrish.
4. Actress and host Christina Ferrare on the beach in a bikini in 1967. Today, she is known as the host of the Hallmark Channel show Home & Family.
5. Actress Lucille Ball also showed up at a Los Angeles beach in the dress she wore in Best Foot Forward (1943). Ball is best known for her role in the sitcom I Love Lucy. She has been nominated for an Emmy Award 13 times and won four.
6. The amazing Lithuanian-American actress Ruth Roman, known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Strangers on a Train (1951).
7. Merle Oberon, who starred in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933) and The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), watches beach life through binoculars from her home on Trunca Beach in 1948.
8. June Clyde, who began her career at the age of seven on the vaudeville stage and then starred in 60 films, covered herself with cellophane to avoid getting sunburned. 1932.
