Portal to Other Worlds - Ladybower Reservoir crater

Photos of this spectacular place, you may have seen scattered on the net without captions. It doesn't look like a miracle of nature, but it looks impressive! It turns out that this is not a gateway to the underworld, but just a funnel-shaped weir on the Ladybower reservoir in the English county of Derbyshire. The spillway of this form is not the only one in the world, but it is the largest.

1. Ladybower is a Y-shaped reservoir into which the Eshop and Derwent rivers flow.

2. It is just over 3 miles (4.8 km) long and was the largest body of water in the UK at the time of construction.

3. Construction began in 1935, but due to the Second World War, it was delayed, it took time to fill the reservoir, build a dam and two viaducts Ashopton and Ladybower.

4. The opening ceremony, which was attended by King George VI, accompanied by Queen Elizabeth, took place on September 25, 1945.

5. The design of the dam provides for two weirs 24m and 4.6m in diameter, resembling an inverted bell in shape.

6. These funnels look especially spectacular during the overflow of the tank, when excess water flowing into them completely covers the edges of concrete wells.
