Now he has settled in Los Angeles, but for how long - no one knows. Southam's restless nature coexists with a constant search for something new, so he cannot sit still. The portraits he creates are also very different and one might think that they were taken at different times by several photo artists with different styles and techniques.
Andrew Southam's career as a photographer began in his homeland, Sydney. He shot for various publications and presentations of artists from the Sydney Opera House and the Australian Ballet. Southam liked working with people from the art world so much that he decided to become a "star" portraitist.
Southam has posed for Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Kevin Spacey and many others. His direct involvement in cinematography helps him in his work. Southam studied screenwriting and cinematography at the University of California, Los Angeles and film at the Art Center College of Design. Therefore, he knows many of the subjects of his portraits personally.
Andrew Southam's skills have been highly praised at international exhibitions and competitions. His photographs have been recognised by the Society of Publishing Designers and the photographer has been awarded a Dove Award. His portraits have also been exhibited at the Australian National Portrait Gallery.
Southam currently lives in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles with his wife Tracy and his favorite subject: his young son William. He photographs not only celebrities and his family, but also ordinary Americans he meets on the street or at the beach.
Andrew Southam's photographs are varied and have a deep understanding of his subjects. What style of portraiture do you prefer - classic, atmospheric or experimental?
