Their marriage lasted only 9 months, but this does not mean that the feelings have faded. Di Maggio, until the death of the actress, passionately loved her and tried to support her. These relationships were watched with bated breath by millions of fans who did not even suspect what passions were boiling between their idols.
In the early 1950s, DiMaggio was the most famous baseball player in the United States. At the same time, Marilyn Monroe had already become a Hollywood star of the first magnitude. They met on the initiative of Joe, who in 1952 asked a friend to arrange a meeting with Marilyn. The woman agreed, but with great reluctance. Later, Monroe said that she expected to see another stupid and arrogant champion, who would immediately start obsessively courting her.
But everything turned out to be completely different. Monroe saw a smart and well-mannered man who behaved very delicately and treated her as special. We can say that DiMaggio immediately won the heart of the actress and they started dating. The journalists immediately found out about this, who arranged a real hunt for the couple.
The paparazzi wanted to get the cherished pictures of lovers at any cost, but this did not work out for a long time. DiMaggio and Monroe were very careful and did not appear in public together. They met at home or in the offices of expensive restaurants, where the press could not get.
DiMaggio treated his beloved very reverently. He knew how sensitive and vulnerable Marilyn was and did not want anyone to use it. Not everyone liked their relationship. One day, Joe invited a very important person into the office and advised him to part with Monroe. He believed that the reputation of an athlete could suffer due to a relationship with an actress known for her many novels. In response, DiMaggio said that no one dares to tell him what to do, and left, slamming the door loudly.
Joe and Marilyn's relationship developed rapidly. They had common desires - both wanted a family and children. True, they lived in different parts of the United States and this greatly interfered with their meetings. But at some point, the couple decided to legalize the relationship. The schedules of the bride and groom were very tight, but they chose the time for a modest wedding without guests. On January 14, 1954, they went to the San Francisco City Hall and registered their marriage.
Joe didn't have time for a honeymoon. Immediately after painting, he was supposed to fly to Japan. Monroe went with him, and this trip replaced their traditional honeymoon trip. The first serious quarrels began almost immediately. Joe was jealous of Marilyn for her work and the men who were constantly with her. He was also angered by the popularity of his wife, who grew every day.
The actress also behaved not too correctly. One day, after another spat, she left to perform in Korea without saying a word to Joe. After that, relations worsened even more. During this period, Monroe called her close friend and complained about unfulfilled expectations from marriage.
Joe also did not lag behind and complained about his wife to his friends. He was annoyed by the slovenliness of Monroe, who could not wash for several days. He was also pissed off by the overly revealing outfits of the actress and her defiant stage image. But most of all, he was pissed off that Monroe could not bear him a child.
In the same 1954, in September, a serious scandal occurred in a young family. It originated from a famous scene from the movie The Seven Year Itch. This is the moment when Marilyn Monroe is standing over the grate of the subway, and the air lifts her dress. Hundreds of street onlookers and dozens of journalists watched the endless takes of this scene. DiMaggio was also standing in the crowd, who really did not like what was happening.
At home, they began to swear, and Monroe could not stand it. A few days after the quarrel, she gave the first comment about the breakup, and in October 1954 she filed for divorce. The family idyll, if you can call it that, lasted only 9 months. Joe soon regretted his behavior. He began to look for meetings with Marilyn, tried to establish communication through friends. But the woman repeated over and over again that she didn't want to hear about Joe.
During the divorce proceedings, Monroe cited psychological abuse by her husband as the reason for the separation. After the divorce, each of the former spouses began to live their own lives. It seems that love has gone without a trace. But DiMaggio acted as if he was still hoping for a reunion with his beloved. The athlete was often seen in the company of beautiful and famous women. But Joe did not give rise to gossip and never called any of the ladies his girlfriend. By the way, he never married again.
But Marilyn was different. She willingly accepted the courtship of men and soon married the playwright Arthur Miller. The couple lived together for 4 years and broke up at the moment when Monroe began a protracted career and psychological crisis. The condition of the actress worsened so much that she even had to go to the clinic and undergo treatment for depression.
And in this difficult period in the life of Marilyn, Joe appears again. He persuaded her to stop treatment, which did not work, and took her to Florida, where he worked as a trainer. Journalists immediately announced the restoration of relations, but Monroe always said that they were purely friendly. Perhaps this was not true. It is known that shortly before the death of his beloved, DiMaggio broke off a lucrative contract for no apparent reason.
Many were sure that he again proposed to Marilyn and that there would be a wedding soon. Like it or not, is unknown. If something was planned, then the death of the actress destroyed everything and completely struck Joe. On August 4, 1962, Monroe passed away and DiMaggio was heartbroken. Despite this, he found the strength to start preparing the funeral. He insisted that the ceremony be closed and not turned into a show for the curious.
Until his departure in 1999, DiMaggio categorically refused to talk about his relationship with Monroe. But for another 20 years after the death of his beloved, he regularly transferred flowers to her grave. Those who knew Joe well were sure that he never stopped loving Marilyn. At the same time, Monroe's friends assured that she had always loved only DiMaggio. Shortly before his death, the athlete told his lawyer that he was looking forward to death. After all, the only way he can finally reunite with his beloved woman.
