Located at the foot of Mount Koya-san in the small settlement of Kudoyama, the Jison-in Temple is probably one of the most unique Buddhist shrines in Japan.
From the outside, the temple is no different from any other. But as soon as you enter, the interior design will remind you that you are in a truly special place. Inside you can find thousands of wooden plaques with breasts made of foam rubber and fabric, plastic or paint.
Originally, the Jison-in temple was built as an entrance to the sacred mountain Koya-san. But one day a doctor came here with a special prayer for one of his patients who was suffering from breast cancer, and changes began in the church. The doctor asked for permission to bring an offering in the form of a breast to the temple. The ministers agreed, and soon a new tradition was born.
Since the appearance of that first pair of breasts, people from all over the country began to come to the temple to add their mini-breasts to the offerings. Some visitors pray for a healthy pregnancy, while others ask the gods for stable lactation or a cure for breast cancer.
The tradition is a little strange, but its essence is just beautiful. But the question arises: what percentage of these tablets were here together with the prayer for breast enlargement or reduction? Surely such prayers are very common among the parishioners of this temple.
