How our grandmothers had fun in 1953

In 1723, Portuguese settlers brought with them a new, slightly wild custom in its embodiment — entrudo. This is how the settlers called the holiday before Lent, during which it was supposed to come off to the fullest, so that later with a clear conscience they could "indulge" in restrictions and strictness. Noting entrudo, the innately violent Portuguese arranged a full "Harlem shake": they poured water on each other, sprinkled flour, threw beans and eggs.
A royal decree soon banned entrudo, but it was replaced by male dances to Brazilian-African music. In the XIX century, Rio was flooded by former slaves from coffee plantations. They united in the so—called ranchos - groups that gathered at their leisure and danced. And at the beginning of the XX century, immigrants and all entrudo fans began to dance samba.
In these pictures, tourists and residents of Rio de Janeiro go to the 1953 carnival.
