Escape from the hustle and bustle: photos of Europeans hiding from civilization

In recent decades, the voluntary flight of people from modern civilization has become increasingly popular in the developed world. As a rule, this applies to residents of large cities who are hiding from the benefits and bustle of the post-industrial economy. 

French photographer Antoine Brouy has been traveling for several years on the farms of Europeans hiding from time and taking pictures of their everyday life. The photographer puts the resulting frames in a series of Scrublands.

El Pardal, Sierra de Cazorla, Spain

El Pardal Farm was founded in 1986 in a nature reserve near the Sierra de Cazorla mountains in Spain. For the last quarter of a century, a German named Amiro has lived here. The nearest village is three hours away on foot.

Vincent

Vincent was a mathematician until he went to live in Ramounat, a famous settlement in the French Pyrenees, in 2007.

Ramounat, Pyrenees, France

The settlement of Ramounat was built by the German Peter and his family. Later, the family left, but Peter stayed. In this house there is almost no electricity, all the necessary energy its residents get from the solar panel.

This is the second Ramounat house, its height is nine meters. In the summer, it is home to volunteers who have come to work on the farm.

For the past 30 years, Christian, a former engineer, has lived in the downshifter-restored village of Ces, located near the Alpine Mountains.

Sabine

Sabine, Christian's wife, has lived at Ces for 15 years. She used to teach philosophy and literature, but now she and her husband run their own household.

Bio toilet, Sierra Nevada, Spain

20 years ago, an Englishwoman, Kate, was hit by a car. After receiving compensation, she bought land in Spain near the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Kate had built up the land with her own hands, like this composting toilet.

Olivier treats a sheep

Olivier lives with his wife in the French province of Ardeche. They raise goats and sheep.

Gardeners ' House, Spain

Three families live in this house. They grow vegetables and fruits. The land belongs to the web developer: one half of the day he works on the sites, the other-on his property.

The Wandering Shepherd

This German travels between farms in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and helps their owners care for cows and sheep.
