Ed van der Elsken: Love, Sex, Art and Jazz

Categories: Culture | Europe

The work of the Dutch photographer and director Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) was built around his many years of travel and the characters he met along the way. He was born in Amsterdam and, in fact, learned everything on his own. In his seemingly crude works, there is less traditional technique and composition and more of the atmosphere of the places and companies of people that he shot.

Ed van der Elsken's images capture the everyday, intimate and autobiographical moments of European life after World War II and in the 1970s, combining love, sex, art, jazz and alternative culture.
