Archaeologists have discovered an ancient papyrus that tells how the Egyptians transported two-ton blocks of limestone and granite over a distance of more than 800 kilometers.

Scientists have long found out that granite for construction was mined in Aswan, 800 kilometers from Giza, and limestone was brought from Tours. But they still could not come to a consensus on transportation.

An ancient document says that thousands of skilled workers transported 170,000 tons of limestone on wooden boats connected by ropes along the Nile, and then through a specially built canal system. The end point was the inner port, located near the site of the pyramids.

The papyrus scroll was discovered in the seaport of Wadi al-Jarf. The technology was described by Merer, the supervisor in charge of a team of 40 workers. To date, this is the only first-hand account of the construction of the pyramid.

Merer describes how his team participated in the transformation of the landscape, opening dams to divert water from the Nile into artificial channels.
