In 1968, the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu appointed the small town of Vaslui, the new capital of the eponymous region, because the Bârlad is the largest city in the district was the birth place of his former rival, Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej. Ceausescu could not give him such honor.

So, on a whim, he turned a little Vaslui in the thriving regional centre in just five years. A huge number of peasants were transferred there for the whole night and settled on the modular homes. Nevertheless, the combination of communism and Ceausescu's evil nature could bring in Vaslui latest architecture, engineering, plumbing and heating.
