The product was not enough for everyone, and fans of the series began to organize protest actions at some restaurants. A week later, Rachel Mary put up a bag of sauce for auction and exchanged it for a 2000 Volkswagen Golf car.

23-year-old Rachel Mary lives in Michigan, she works as a graphic designer and studies business at university. On the day of the McDonald's promotion, she woke up at nine in the morning and went to a restaurant with a friend for Sichuan sauce. She managed to take the ninth place in the queue and purchase the coveted product.
But instead of just eating the sauce with French fries, the girl saved it. She posted a photo of the sauce in the Pin Nation group on Facebook, where fans of "Rick and Morty" buy and sell themed badges and jewelry.
According to Mary, she received a lot of comments, the authors of which were ready to exchange good badges for sauce, but then a man living nearby offered her his Volkswagen Golf Mk4, and they agreed on a deal.
The former Volkswagen owner said that he has another car, which he will now repair for daily use, and in a Business Insider correspondence on Facebook explained that he "just needed this damn sauce."
This man is not the only one who paid a surprisingly high price for a limited edition product (such a Golf can cost up to $ 2,000): packages of sauce were sold on eBay for hundreds of dollars. However, McDonald's announced that by winter restaurants will start selling sauce again and there will be enough for everyone.
Sichuan sauce appeared in McDonald's in 1998 as part of the promotional campaign of the cartoon "Mulan". In the first episode of the third season in "Rick and Morty" there is a joke that the scientist Rick travels through parallel universes just for this sauce. Then fans of the series launched a petition asking McDonald's to put it back on sale.
In July 2017, McDonald's sent the creator of "Rick and Morty" Justin Royland a canister of Sichuan sauce. The senders claimed to have discovered a parallel dimension in which the year is always 1998.
In the summer of 2017, Sichuan sauce was served in the canteen of the University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics in St. Petersburg.
