A couple who bought a dilapidated church at auction for 85,000 pounds (about 8.8 million rubles), transformed it into a stunning home worth 1 million pounds (about 103 million rubles). Most of the repairs were done by the couple themselves. As a result, the abandoned building has changed beyond recognition, preserving the charm of antiquity and finding modern comfort.
St Paul's Church in Denholm, West Yorkshire, was almost in ruins at the time of its purchase in 2017 by Sean and Debs Kenny-Tallis. They invested in real estate on the eve of the wedding, intending to turn the old building into their family nest.
The church was built in 1846, and in 1999 it was closed due to the spread of dry rot in the room. Since then, the building has stood untouched until the couple undertook repairs.
Most of the work was done by the couple with their own hands. During the renovation, the couple lived in a van on the church grounds.
Plaster work, masonry and roof installation were carried out by professional craftsmen.
Sean says that they immediately liked the building, despite the fact that it was in a deplorable state.
Thanks to the work and diligence of the owners, the dilapidated church has turned into a cozy mansion with four bedrooms, a balcony, a modern kitchen and a living room. Under the former bell tower there is an extension for guests. The couple also plan to organize a barbecue area there.
Inside, everything looks stylish and modern. Walls, partitions, and new floors transformed the interior. But Sean and Debs decided to keep the original features of the old building-the Gothic windows, the altar part and the gallery.
The church cemetery, which was overgrown with grass and became almost impassable, was cleared and improved. Now relatives of former parishioners can come here and visit the graves of their loved ones.
The cost of the building after renovation reaches 1 million pounds (about 103 million rubles).
Meanwhile, another British woman has independently turned an abandoned house into a personal little paradise. Thanks to her creativity and skillful hands, a dirty and cluttered place has turned into a cozy space that breathes light and cleanliness.
