The series ended, I must say, so that now there is no desire to remember it, but I want to speculate about who still became the successor to the HBO hit? We've chosen eight — obvious and not-so-obvious-series that we can call "the next Game of Thrones."
Let's start with the most recent series in the selection. "Shadow and Bone" even on paper looks like a very easy attempt to play on the principle of "Game of Thrones": Netflix bought the rights to the popular series of fantasy books by Lee Bardugo in the last decade and decided to film it with an eye to 3-4 seasons.
The series seems to be actively watched — it even occupies the first places in the top in popularity on Netflix, but it will definitely not grow to an international level; to the status of the project, which should, if not watch, then at least know everyone around you: from work colleagues to close friends.
After the first season, "Shadow and Bone" looks more like a harmless disappointment: the kind of optional teen fantasy that decided not to jump over its head.
Without straying far from the Netflix fantasy, it is worth remembering "The Witcher". The book series by Andrzej Sapkowski is, of course, a cheat; the most obvious option that could arise from the bosses of the platform, who were talking about a series that could become a worthy heir to "Game of Thrones".
The success of the video game series, which turned gamers into fans of everything related to The Witcher, played an important role here. This multi-million audience was not enough except for a decent film adaptation-alas, Netflix, to put it mildly, framed them. The series ' confusing and clumsy first season is clearly not what everyone expected. It seems that if the song "Pay the Witcher with a minted coin" had not been fired, then the series would have been forgotten quite quickly.
The second season, which will be released later this year, will be decisive for the series: either "The Witcher" will reach a level close to "Game of Thrones", or it will continue its disappointing existence.
"The Bridgertons" somehow suddenly appeared in the infield and, judging by the extension for four seasons at once, they should stay with us for a long time.
The film adaptation of a series of novels by the writer Julia Queen caused a lot of controversy due to blind casting (London aristocrats of the XIX century are played by black actors) and a huge number of erotic scenes. These two chips seemed to be enough to" Bridgerton " discussed everywhere for a month and a half after the release, but now, four months later, the series is almost not remembered. The last time they talked about him was because of the big news: the main star of the project, Rege Page, will not appear in the second season.
Let's think: even if the actor who became a star thanks to the project is not sure about the future of "Bridgerton", then we will not be surprised if the series loses popularity by the third season, and maybe even earlier.
It seems to be simple: "Very strange things" is the main series of the post-"Game of Thrones" era: a super-popular, constantly growing in budget and widely expected project that turned little-known actors into stars of the first magnitude.
However, not everything is so clear: the third season of the series was released a long two years ago — not only that it turned out to be controversial and scared off many fans, so even during this time, "Very Strange Things" seemed to have crossed the peak of its popularity. The expectations for the fourth season, which may well be delayed until 2022, are nothing compared to how we waited for the second and even third seasons.
Perhaps, by the release of new episodes, everything will change, but judging by the weak reaction to the teasers of the fourth season, viewers quickly switched to other series.
From the diverse Netflix catalog, we switch to Amazon. Speaking about the decline in the popularity of "Very strange cases", you should first of all remember the "Boys".
There is some irony in the fact that in the year when the Marvel cinematic universe reached its peak ("Avengers: Endgame" became the highest-grossing film in history), a series appeared on the small screens, darkly mocking everything related to superheroics: from the hypocrisy and ambition of superheroes to the producer's desire to develop a multi-billion-dollar franchise by any means. In two years, "The Boys" has come an incredible way from a very risky project to the flagship series of Amazon Prime.
Given the promise of the creators to raise the bar of quality and insanity with each season, we can safely say that "The Boys" will remain with us for a long time and will gain a foothold in the pantheon of the most popular series of our generation.
It seems that after the release of "The Boys" superhero series can be divided into three types: CW projects, large-budget, but rather primitive blockbusters ("The Falcon and the Winter Soldier") and something alternative, not shy, like "The Boys", to shock and frighten the audience.
"Invulnerable" is a series of the third type, which is not just close in spirit to "The Boys", but also in many ways wins from it. Voiced by the stars of the first magnitude, the project began modestly, but by the end of the first season it became a hit for the audience, leaving a bright mark in the history of memes ("Think, Mark"). This is an expensive blockbuster, which, due to the limitless possibilities of animation, can afford many times more than any representative of the genre.
If the creators continue in this spirit, then through "Invulnerable" will bring Amazon a lot more subscribers than the record-breaking, but dubious series based on the Lord of the Rings universe.
"Mandalorian" is another unqualified hit of the selection and the audience's favorite.
The second season seems to have proved that the initial success of the series was not an accident, but it made us think about the future of the Star Wars universe: it continues to live at the expense of cameos and parasitism on the legacy! Here are the two highlights of the second season-the epic appearances of Ahsoka Tano and Luke Skywalker.
It is not entirely clear what to expect from the series next: either the creators will again focus on the history of Mando and Grogu, or they will continue to play with the fanservice and use "Mandalorian" as a platform for promoting a dozen serial spin-offs. You know the answer, but we'll wait until season three to say it out loud.
You will be surprised, but the anime "Attack of the Titans" is formally the closest project to "Game of Thrones". It's not even about plot parallels (both series have a protective wall and a heavy emphasis on political intrigue), but about waiting for the finale, which has become a cultural event for many.
As two years ago, readers of " A Song of Ice and Fire "and viewers of the final season of" Game of Thrones", and this spring, manga fans and viewers of the anime" Attack of the Titans " together watched the final of the epic saga, not knowing how it will end. The only difference is that the last chapter of the manga was released after the release of the first half of the final season of the anime — the second should appear next winter.
It is a pity that mangaka Hajime Isayama and the creators of the series did not synchronize the release of manga and anime, but even without this, "Attack of the Titans" remains one of the most popular and discussed projects of recent years.
