His father supported Michael and paid for the trip.

In the fall of 1961, Michael went on an expedition to New Guinea with the Dutch ethnographer Rene Vassin. Accompanied by 2 guides, the scientists traveled to the places where the locals lived and exchanged things with them. Sometime later, they had a unique collection, but Michael did not want to stop there. The scientist went to the local Asmat tribe by boat. The tribe was famous for eating people.

On the way to the island, the boat capsized, and everyone, except for Michael, decided to return: but he wanted to swim to his destination. After that, he was never seen again. Many people think he drowned or was eaten by crocodiles, but these are either unlikely versions. According to the most likely version, he was killed and eaten by the tribe.
