What secret was hidden behind the appearance of the legendary band of the 90s " Enigma»
Everyone probably knows the music of the band "Enigma". But today, for many, this is just a" hello from the 90s", but a quarter of a century ago, this German team had a stunning success. Interest in the compositions fueled the aura of mystery, because at the time of the release of the first album, no one knew the names and faces of the band members, whose name translates from Greek as "riddle".
The project "Enigma", founded in 1990, was completely studio-based and did not involve live concerts. But the intrigue was kept very short – a little more than a year. In 1991, the Munich-based choir Kapelle Antiqua sued the band and demanded a public apology and monetary compensation for the use of their chorales in their compositions. The scandal that broke out around this lawsuit revealed the names of the project participants.
Enigma was founded by the Romanian-born German musician Michael Cretu. In the 80s, he worked as a keyboardist in the band Arabesque, where he met his love in the person of vocalist Sandra Ann Lauer. Cretu convinced Sandra to leave the trio and start working on her own project. The couple was joined by several other talented musicians – Frank Peterson, David Feirstein and Peter Cornelius. During the existence of the team, its composition has changed several times.
The first album "Enigma", called "MCMXC a. D", was a real revelation for music lovers and received many awards. Songs from it were in all charts and sounded at discos around the world. The project turned out to be stronger than the relationship between Michael and Sandra – they broke up in 2007, and the band still exists and regularly pleases with new albums.
In 2019, there was an event of special importance – "Enigma" began to perform concerts, however, under the changed name "Original Enigma Voices". The concert line – up of the band does not include Michael Cretu-Andrew Donalds, Andreas Harde and Fox Lima perform on stage.
The Enigma group is rightfully considered one of the most successful bands in the world. To date, 70 million albums have been sold, more than 100 gold and platinum discs have been received, and three Grammy Awards have been awarded.
We can only add that the members of the band "Enigma" are not the only musicians who hid their faces – this technique was used by many successful teams.
