"The rebellious spirit of the old lady of England": previously unknown photos of skinheads of the 60-80s were published
Provocative clothing, aggressive behavior, disregard for the foundations of society. These guys and girls are literally shouting their protest. Rare photos from this collection show representatives of the current before it became widespread.
The hippie culture that was emerging at that time was not close to guys and girls from the new areas of the south-east of England. They made a different choice.
Typical representatives of the skinhead movement are distinguished by the "Jamaican street style" in clothing, a love of American soul and German army boots. And of course, a short haircut or a shaved head, typical for both guys and girls.
Previously unpublished photos stunningly accurately convey the rebellious spirit and eccentric style of representatives of this subculture. In this picture, young people are rehearsing the "moonwalk" in front of a London shop.
Initially, the current attracted representatives of young people who protested against bourgeois society. They were not rich, hot-tempered, full of rebellion.
Later, skinheads began to speak out against prudery, commerce, luxury.
Nationalist ideas in the movement began to manifest themselves closer to the 70s, when the only possible way to express themselves was scuffles on the streets. The "skinheads of the second wave" were the first to protest to representatives of a certain nationality, for example, immigrants from Asia and Africa, blaming them for the economic crisis of their country.
Skinheads often vented their anger and hatred on the police, who reacted accordingly. There is an incident when 700 skinheads were taken out of the city for "prevention". Then most of them were put on a train and sent back, and 150 people, including several 10-year-olds, were arrested. The photos from this collection are taken from the book " Skins: The Way of Life", which was released in Britain in October 2018 and is sold for 16 pounds.
The pictures are titled as follows: "Skinheads are the only movement that originated in England, which still scares people."
The Trojan Records brand, which produced ska, rocksteady and reggae music, has always remained a symbol of the original skinhead movement.
