In China, the puppy of the first cloned police dog has started training
A 2-month-old Kunming Shepherd puppy named Kunsun was cloned from the DNA of an award-winning police sniffer dog in the hope that such puppies would become suitable for police work.
In March, Kunsun began training on the basis of police dogs of the Ministry of Public Security in Yunnan Province. The entire puppy training course will take 8-10 months, including search and rescue, tracking and drug detection skills. After that, the dog will begin combat service.
Kunsun was cloned from the DNA of a 7-year-old shepherd dog named Huahuangma, a famous police dog who became famous for his abilities as a bloodhound and solving many cases. For example, in 2016, she discovered the main evidence – the key to a hotel room, which helped to arrest a murder suspect.
Thus, the Chinese government is trying to save money, since most of the police dogs in the country are imported breeds. It takes 5 years and about 75 thousand dollars to raise and train them to the level of Huahuangma. As experts hope, the cloned puppies will improve the quality of work of service dogs thanks to the already set set of skills and will save money. The Kunming Shepherd is the only local breed used by the Chinese police. She was specially bred for service from the German Shepherd and other breeds from the K9 program in the 1950s.
Kunsun was born on December 19, 2018 through a caesarean section. It weighed 540 grams, and reached a length of 23 centimeters. The puppy is very friendly to people, sociable, but vigilant. Kunsun is not afraid of the dark and unfamiliar places, she has a strong sense of smell and she perfectly finds hidden objects.
