California in the 70s-the Golden Age of skater culture

Categories: Culture | North America |

Skateboarding culture in California in the ' 70s left an indelible mark on sports and on American cultural identity. Photographer Hugh Holland perfectly captured the spirit of this heyday in his photo project "Only Local: Skateboarding in California in 1975-1978".

Interestingly, the golden age of skateboarding was triggered by a drought that occurred in the state in the 70s: swimming pools and gutters were without water, and young people chose them for riding on boards.

The photographer himself did not skate, but simply spent three years shooting these kids and their unique subculture.
