This is a picture of the Beatles that the vast majority of people, even the most devoted fans of the band, have not seen.
In a photo taken in Hamburg in 1962, in the port district of Hamburg at the Star-Club in Riperbahn, and which their manager, Brian Epstein, kept secret for many years, the Beatles hold cones containing preludin tablets, aka "prelies" in the jargon of the time: a dietary remedy that the band members took to avoid collapsing from exhaustion during hours of concerts.
The active ingredient in these tablets is fenmetrazine, a stimulant that is now banned worldwide. At one time, fenmetrazine was wildly popular, and it was taken, according to biographers, including John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Marilyn Monroe.
