Young von Herfeldt went traveling, wanting to find a mentor who would help him develop as a painter. The artist's first teacher was Franz von Stuck; Marcel spent many months in his Munich workshop. Then the young man took lessons in Florence and Paris.

The artist's style, combining realistic and expressionist elements, is well recognizable. Most often, Marcel Rene von Herfeldt turned to female erotic images.
