Categories: Nations | Photo project
By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/tribe-and-place.htmlPhotographer Marco Vernaschi traveled to Argentinean Patagonia to photograph the life of the Mapuche Indian tribe, the only indigenous people in South America that was not conquered by the Spanish colonizers.
For the last ten years Italian photographer Marco Vernaci has been living and working in Buenos Aires. In 2013, he founded Biophilia, a charitable foundation dedicated to developing the countryside and supporting local communities.
The Mapuche - Patagonia series is dedicated to the Mapuche Indian people living in the Nahuel Huapi National Park in the province of Neuquen. The Mapuche tribes refused to recognize the authority of the Spanish colonialists, fought a war for independence for three centuries and still defend their right to land. Today, the nation has about one and a half million people. Despite forced assimilation, the Mapuche retained their own language, traditions and beliefs.
