If it rains heavily in the desert in the spring of the Southern Hemisphere (October, November), the flowers that are “hibernating” under its surface suddenly begin to bloom!
This year, the downpour was brought by the same cyclone as Hurricane Patricia. "The intensity of the bloom this year is unprecedented," says Daniel Diaz, head of Chile's National Tourist Service.
Diaz links the amazing phenomenon to climate change. Locals are happy with the influx of tourists attracted by the blooming desert. It is expected that about 20 thousand people will come to see the flowers.
