The island itself is surrounded by many picturesque cliffs, the largest of them rises above the water almost on three hundred meters height.
This is a beautiful village, mentioned in our issue.
1. Amazingly picturesque Danish village Gasadalur is on the West side of the island Voar (at vagar), part of the Faroe Islands. The island itself is quite large — its area is 176 sq km and a population of nearly 3,000 people. The island has an international airport, and under the bottom of the Strait paved five-kilometer tunnel to the island Streymoy is the biggest island of the archipelago. In total, the archipelago consists of 18 island and all, except one, are people. Only in the Faroe Islands 120 villages and towns.
2. Village Gasadalur always been small, and today it resides only 15 people. But if considered together with the tourists, the people here much more.
3. The origin of the name of their village, the locals tell a legend: once upon a time in the village on the island Streymoy woman by the name of GEZ was caught in the fact that she eats meat during lent. For such sinful behavior all her property confiscated and wanted to judge, but she ran away to the neighboring island of Voar and settled in a quiet place among the rocks. In her honor the village got its name — Gasadalur ("Valley Gas"). However, historians doubt the truth of these events and argue that, most likely, "Gasadalur" should be deciphered as "Goose valley", because this place has always been inhabited by many wild geese.
4. Village Gasadalur is in an incredibly beautiful valley between the high cliffs of the island. Rocks tightly surround the village, and to get to another part of the island, its inhabitants always had to use the trail up into the hills as much as 400 meters. Because of this isolation and inaccessibility, the population of the village gradually declined, and in 2002 there were only 16 residents.
5. But in 2004, solid rock has done a road tunnel, and people started again to settle in this fabulously beautiful place.
6. Despite the rather Spartan living conditions (in villages have no modern amenities), tourists love the local unique landscape. On the island there are three waterfalls — one of them, Bottolfson, located on the shore, and its waters fall into the Atlantic ocean from a height of 30 meters. In the two large lakes of the island and, of course, the ocean excellent fishing.
7. So today the main income of the inhabitants Gasadalur not receive from fishing or farming (although the sheep in the Faroe Islands and today is almost two times more than people), namely from tourism.
