They attract not only experienced extreme sports enthusiasts, but also ordinary tourists. But visiting such places is dangerous even for professionals. To satisfy the passion for adventure, special locations are often created. One of them is the huge cruise liner MS World Discoverer, lying on its side in a picturesque bay on one of the Solomon Islands.
In April 2000, the cruise ship MS World Discoverer was sailing along the picturesque routes of the Solomon Islands archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Fate played a cruel joke on it: it ran into a reef not marked on the navigation charts. The hole in the hull turned out to be critical, and the captain, realizing the danger, sent out a distress signal.
The passengers were quickly evacuated and taken to shore. Thanks to the professionalism of the crew and captain, there were no casualties. At the same time, the seriously damaged ship was left to drift.
To save the liner from imminent sinking, the captain steered it to Roderick Bay on Nggela Sule Island. There, the ship was carefully grounded near the beach. The company that owned the ship planned to tow it away for repairs, but these plans were thwarted by the civil war that was raging in the Solomon Islands at the time.
The repair work was postponed, and the liner remained on the island. During this time, locals dismantled everything they could use or sell. Deprived of a chance of restoration, the MS World Discoverer finally turned into ruins. However, it acquired a new status - it became a landmark.
The 85-meter vessel, lying on its side in a tropical bay, quickly attracted the attention of tourists. The Solomon Islands, known for their natural beauty, received a unique object that combined man-made heritage and natural beauty. The liner, surrounded by turquoise waters and tropical greenery, turned into one of the most photographed attractions in the region.
Local tour companies have gone to great lengths to ensure safe access to the ship. Tours around the MS World Discoverer are now guided, allowing adventurers to enjoy the sights and atmosphere with minimal risk.
Today, the abandoned liner is known all over the world. Its photos adorn travel sites and social networks, attracting more and more travelers to the Solomon Islands. Once just one of many cruise ships, it has now become a symbol of abandoned grandeur and human curiosity.
