The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and this event affected everyone in different ways. For example, the southeastern part of Moldova decided to remain faithful to the ideals of communism, declared itself independent and separated from the Moldavian SSR. The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic is still an unrecognized state.

When photographer Julia Outts heard about it, she decided that she definitely had to go there and see everything with her own eyes. "I wanted to know how people who live in a country with an uncertain status and future feel."
