But what can be considered courage, and what is tasteless?
This time, for many guests of the event, which took place on Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the risk was very high. In 2017, the theme of the reception was the work of Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo — Rei Kawakubo/Comme de Garçon: Art of the In-Between, and the stars tried to outdo each other in the unusual details of the costume and their unimaginable combinations.

The competition was high, but singer Katy Perry was recognized as the undisputed queen of the reception this year: some considered her outfit the brightest, unusual and praiseworthy, while others awarded her first place in the list of the worst dressed. The outfit from the fashion house Maison Margiela, designed personally by John Galliano, included a red tulle and chiffon dress, a red wool embroidered cape, and a red veil on the head of the pop star.
On her feet, Katy Perry wore red Tabi boots with split toes that peeked out from under her dress, resembling hooves. Over the veil, they put on a complex design with details resembling rear-view mirrors and costume jewelry.
Singer Rita Ora chose a composite red satin dress with a pale pink petticoat and a black and white train for the red carpet.
Madonna is eager to fight again: the pop diva came to the Met Gala ball in a camouflage dress, and instead of a boa, she took a camouflage net with her. Among other ornaments, Madonna's teeth glittered in her mouth.
In second place in the degree of strangeness was a couple — singer Pharrell Williams with his wife Helen Lasichan. For some reason, despite his important role in the Met Gala event, Pharrell was dressed as if for a walk — in ripped jeans, a plaid shirt and a black leather jacket.
But Pharrell Williams faded against the background of his wife's sleeveless monolithic outfit. Seriously, what was that?..
Actress Claire Danes was slightly lost against the background of numerous ruffles, asymmetry and lapels.
In the list of strange outfits, it is impossible not to mention Rihanna. She put on a dress made of many flounces, sewn from different pieces of fabric into a shapeless mass. On one side there was a voluminous detail, somewhat resembling a saddle. However, Rihanna likes to surprise at the Met Gala.
Will Smith's son Jayden dressed up in black, and as an accessory waved a bunch of his own cut hair, braided in dreadlocks.
On the left — American actress Tracey Ellis Ross, on the right — French model Emeline Valad. Both were poorly successful in trying to impress with blue outfits.
A red dress with a slit on actress Thandie Newton (left) would look much better if it weren't for the excessively "smoky" makeup on half of her face and flowers on her head. Actress Hayley Bennett (right), as they say, "all in creepy roses."
Model Grace Hartzel just couldn't be missed with such an unusual makeup.
Sofia Richie and her slightly rumpled dress.
Actress Dakota Johnson chose a black dress decorated with fabric flowers that was quite appropriate for the red carpet, but her escort seemed to have decided to wear all the best at once.
Beyonce's sister singer Solange Knowles came in a strange-looking puffy down jacket with a train resembling a rubber air mattress.
Indian actress and model Priyanka Chopra chose an outfit for the red carpet that clearly evolved from the classic trench coat.
Sean "Diddy" Combs (Puff Daddy) put an embroidered cape with the same pattern on top of an embroidered jacket.
The Olsen sisters had so many details on their dresses that their eyes ran away.
Victoria's Secret angel model Lily Aldridge wore bright red stocking boots under a snow-white dress, and covered her face with a purple veil.
Actress Lena Dunham (right) with her friend Jenny Conner. The girls decided to choose the same shade. Under a voluminous plaid dress with ruffles, Dunham completely hid her figure.
On the left is fashion consultant Sofia de Betak, the wife of the famous fashion show director Alexander de Betak. On the right is TV presenter Katie Knight.
The wife of designer Rick Owens, Michelle Lamy, fully expressed her creative nature through an eccentric outfit.
On the left is plus—size model Ashley Graham, on the right is singer Rita Ora.
Nicki Minaj in an outfit with open legs and a train decorated with polyvinyl chloride flowers.
Celine Dion seemed to be trying to imitate Sarah Jessica Parker. It didn't work out very well.
Businesswoman Julie Macklow (left) in the likeness of a giant kilt. On the right is the English actress Jemima Kirk.
Caroline Kennedy, daughter of US President John F. Kennedy, in a colorful outfit without hands.
