It is located in the Northern end of the Catlins coast down the road from Kaka point. And on these steep rocks stands a solitary lighthouse, surrounded by rocky islets — the Nuggets. Five minutes and you're at the lighthouse, which offers stunning views of the coast from all sides. Just below the lighthouse on the cliffs you can see seals playing in the rocky lagoons and basking in the sun. The Nugget point is also home to sea lions, petrels, cormorants, penguins, spoonbills and a large colony of gannets. Periodically, here you can find sea elephants and leopards.

The lighthouse was built in 1870 and originally worked in oil.

In 1949, oil lamps were replaced with electric, which was fed by local diesel generator.

Then they were replaced by connections with the main grid although the original lens for the light are still in place and even work.

Fully automated work of the lighthouse was transferred in 1989, and now they run out of control in Wellington.

In 2006, the original light was replaced with led beam.

Best time to visit the Nugget point is either early morning or evening sunrises and sunsets here are especially beautiful.
