But it turns out that such houses were built not only in our country. Moreover, the largest log hut in history appeared not in Russia, but across the ocean. Maybe the princely towers of medieval Russia were larger, but a hut of such size as in American Portland hardly ever existed.
In 1905, a large exhibition was held in Portland, Oregon, USA. Different states, their history, products and traditions were presented at it. Several pavilions were erected for the exposition. One of them was the largest hut in the world - the Forestry pavilion.
The length of the building made of giant logs was 63 meters, width 31 meters, and height 22 meters. The hut with the height of a 7-storey house was built not only for the sake of placing exhibits.
Its creators specifically wanted to set a world record, which was announced immediately after the completion of the work. After the end of the exhibition, the hut was bought by the authorities of Portland and became one of the attractions of the city.
Solid logs with preserved bark were used in the construction. Trees were cut down for construction in the District of Columbia, in the same Oregon. Some of them had a diameter of 1.5 meters!
Inside the pavilion there was an impressive colonnade of 54 tree trunks, which made it look like an ancient temple. To provide light to the huge hall inside the log cabin, light lanterns were used in the gable roof.
Was the hut from Portland the largest? Most likely, yes, at least because there would be no reason to build such a building except for a record. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was no Guinness Book of Records yet, so there was no one to check the achievement and properly record it.
Unfortunately, the huge wooden building has not survived to this day. It decorated Portland for more than half a century and burned down due to faulty wiring in 1964. The pavilion caught fire for the first time back in 1914, but thanks to the efficiency of the Portland firefighters, the fire was extinguished. It turned out that in the good old days firefighters were much faster.
We can only wonder at the photos of the unusual building, which, fortunately, have been preserved a lot.
Did you know that a house doesn't have to be big to become an attraction? A Bosnian pensioner built a very ordinary cottage, but made it rotate. Now everyone knows the Warrior Kusich, his home, and... his grumpy wife.
