Gassam was nicknamed Spider-Man after a video circulated on the Internet showing a migrant climbing the facade of a building to save a child. His act was noted by the Mayor of Paris and the President of France.

After the heroic act, Gassam received the official status of a migrant and entered a 10-month internship in a fire department. During the internship, the guy will be paid a scholarship of 600 euros per month. And within three months, Mamud will receive French citizenship.

Ghassam left Mali as a teenager, traveled for a long time in Libya, then went to Italy and eventually left for France to live with his brother. Gassam did not have any documents, he had to spend the night on the floor in a migrant center in the Paris suburb of Montreuil. Every evening he rolled out a thin mattress on the floor, and in the morning he collected it. He shared a cramped room with six other migrants. In addition, he could not work legally.

The head of Montreuil praised Gassam's brave act and promised to relocate him. But after French President Emmanuel Macron invited Gassam to the Elysee Palace and awarded the guy a medal for bravery, charities working with migrants accused the government of using Mamud for PR.

Charities claim that the government should help thousands of other migrants who live in terrible conditions. A representative of one of the organizations saw "hypocrisy and cynicism" in this act.
