From the beginning of 2022, another dangerous food additive will be banned in the European Union. However, not everywhere, because France outlawed it back in 2019. We are still silent about the harm of this substance, probably, it is not profitable for someone to withdraw products with it. This component, which is so disturbing to Europeans— is titanium dioxide, which appears in the composition of products under the code E171.

The effect of titanium dioxide on the human body has long been an urgent problem for many scientists around the world. But they proved its danger in Australia, at the University of Sydney, relatively recently. Several years of experiments on mice have confirmed that this compound can cause intestinal cancer and a number of other serious diseases.

The substance, getting into the intestines with food, destroys its microflora. No, titanium dioxide does not kill bacteria, but only changes them and leads to a decrease in efficiency. Microorganisms cease to perform their main functions, but at the same time actively multiply. This leads to the formation of biofilm - an accumulation of bacteria that causes inflammatory processes in the intestine. Constantly inflamed tissues are modified and this can cause oncological diseases.

In the food industry, the additive E171 is used for bleaching products. Manufacturers add it to mayonnaise, dairy products, chewing gum, canned fish, bakery and confectionery products. Titanium dioxide is also found in some medicines. The negative effects of the substance on the body and the fact that it is able to accumulate in tissues are already known for sure. Unfortunately, scientists could not establish the permissible daily dose.

Therefore, it was decided, just in case, to completely abandon this dubious connection. The French decided to do this two years ago, and in the rest of the EU, the ban will come into force on January 1, 2022. We have not yet decided what to do with titanium dioxide contained in medicines. In some places, it plays an important role and is still irreplaceable. Therefore, in pharmaceuticals, the use of E171 is still allowed within reasonable limits. But it's probably a matter of time.

For our country, such concern for the health of citizens is atypical, therefore, as they say, "the rescue of drowning people is the work of drowning people themselves." When purchasing food products that have a white color, carefully read the composition. Perhaps the shining whiteness is a sign of danger. Did you know that now harmful additives can be found even in ordinary table salt from the nearest supermarket?
